I have been doing this for 28 years now. Buying cars, appraising them, reselling them. And in all those years I have learned one thing: most people leave money on the table when selling their car. Not because they are not smart. But because nobody gives them the right information.
Three ways to sell your car in Luxembourg
You basically have three options. Each has pros and cons, and nobody likes to talk about them openly.
Private sale
Sounds great at first: no dealer, no middleman, more money for you. In theory. In practice, a private sale means: taking photos, posting ads on AutoScout24 or Facebook, answering enquiries, organising test drives, negotiating with people who offer you 40% below value. And then the paperwork problem. In Luxembourg you have to handle the SNCA deregistration yourself, accompany the buyer to the Controle Technique, and hope there is no trouble after the handover. In Germany, deregistration at the Zulassungsstelle is added on top. In France, it is the Declaration de cession via ANTS. Every country has its own rules, and if you do not know them, you pay the price. A private sale takes on average 4 to 8 weeks. Sometimes longer. And during that time you keep paying insurance and tax.
Trade-in at a dealer
When you buy a new car, the dealer offers you a trade-in. Convenient, sure. But the dealer wants to sell you a car, not buy yours. The trade-in value is often used as a bargaining chip. The discount on the new car shrinks, the purchase price for your used one gets inflated on paper. In the end you pay more than necessary. I see this every week.
Selling to a professional buyer
That is our business at mirkaafenaerenauto.lu. We buy your car directly, whether it is registered in Luxembourg, Germany or France. No waiting for weeks, no test drives with strangers, no paperwork for you. You come by, we make an offer, and if it works for you, the money is in your account the same day. The deregistration at the SNCA, the German Zulassungsstelle, or the Declaration de cession in France? We handle everything. Sure, you might not get the absolute top price that a private sale could theoretically bring. But you save yourself weeks of effort and the risk of being stuck with a car that will not sell.
Documents you will need
Which papers you need depends on where your vehicle is registered. We buy cars from Luxembourg, Germany and France, and the required documents differ by country. A valid ID card or passport is always required. Service booklet and all keys are a bonus but not a must for us. We also buy vehicles with only one key or without a service booklet. If the vehicle is still financed, you will need the loan agreement and a payoff amount from your bank.
If your car is registered in Luxembourg
You need the Carte Grise (registration certificate). A valid Controle Technique from the SNCT is a plus and strengthens your negotiating position, but at mirkaafenaerenauto.lu we also buy without one. All official information can be found at guichet.public.lu.
If your car is registered in Germany
You need the Fahrzeugschein (registration certificate Part I) and the Fahrzeugbrief (registration certificate Part II). A valid HU (main inspection, the Tüv) is nice to have, but we buy without one too. More information at the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA).
If your car is registered in France
You need the Carte Grise (Certificat d'immatriculation). For a private sale, the Controle Technique must be less than 6 months old. But if you sell to a professional like mirkaafenaerenauto.lu, this requirement does not apply. More information at ants.gouv.fr.
At mirkaafenaerenauto.lu we take care of all the paperwork, regardless of whether your vehicle is registered in Luxembourg, Germany or France.
How deregistration works
Once you have sold your car, it must be deregistered. This is mandatory in all three countries. As long as the vehicle is in your name, you are liable.
If your car is registered in Luxembourg
Deregistration is handled through the SNCA (Societe Nationale de Circulation Automobile). You can do this online or in person. You will need the Carte Grise and the licence plates.
If your car is registered in Germany
Deregistration is done at the vehicle registration office (Zulassungsstelle) of your district or city. You need the Fahrzeugschein, the Fahrzeugbrief and the licence plates. Important: keep the deregistration certificate safe. If the vehicle is being exported, export plates may be required.
If your car is registered in France
You report the sale via a Declaration de cession on the portal of the ANTS (Agence Nationale des Titres Securises). It is done entirely online and must happen within 15 days of the sale.
When you sell to mirkaafenaerenauto.lu, we handle the complete deregistration, no matter which country. You do not have to worry about a thing.
Five mistakes almost everyone makes
1. Setting the price too high
Sounds paradoxical, but a price that is too high actually costs you money. Your car sits online for weeks, gets labelled as "overpriced", and in the end you have to come down anyway. Meanwhile you have been paying insurance and tax. A realistic price from the start brings in more.
2. Not preparing the car
A professional interior clean costs 50 to 80 euros. But a clean car easily brings in 200 to 500 euros more when sold. First impressions count, even with cars. Dog hair on the back seat and coffee stains on the upholstery are not a strong negotiating position.
3. Not having your documents ready
If you cannot find the service booklet or have misplaced the spare key, you immediately lose trust. And value. A missing key can cost 300 to 800 euros depending on the brand. Every buyer knows this and deducts it from the price.
4. Hiding damage
Every scratch, every accident will come out. At the latest during the Controle Technique or test drive. Be honest. An accident-damaged car still has value, but trust once lost is hard to win back.
5. Letting yourself be pressured
"I have to decide today, the offer will be gone tomorrow." Sound familiar? Forget it. A good buyer gives you time to think. At mirkaafenaerenauto.lu our offer stands for at least 48 hours. No pressure, no stress.
What gets you the best price?
I get asked this question every day. The answer is not complicated, but not everyone likes it. The value of your car depends on five factors: make and model, mileage and year, condition (accident-damaged cars also have value), equipment and current market conditions. A well-maintained VW Golf with a full service history and one owner fetches more than the same Golf with three previous owners and gaps in the service booklet. Obvious. But exactly how much depends on the market too. In spring and autumn, used cars in Luxembourg are in higher demand than in summer. Germany and France have similar seasonal patterns. So timing alone can also make a 500 to 1,000 euro difference.
