Selling an accident vehicle: Worth more than you think

An accident is annoying enough. But your car is not worthless because of it. Quite the opposite.

6 min read

Last month, a customer came to us. Total loss, she said. Her Hyundai Tucson, front damage after a rear-end collision. The insurance had declared it an economic total loss. She thought the car was worthless. We paid her 4,200 euros for it. Why? Because "economic total loss" does not mean the car is worthless. It only means the repair costs exceed the current value. For a professional buyer, that is a completely different calculation.

Not all damage is the same

When we talk about accident vehicles, you first need to distinguish what type of damage is involved. That makes a huge difference in value.

Cosmetic damage

Dents, scratches, a broken mirror, a bumped bumper. These are damages that can be repaired with relatively little effort. The loss in value is 5 to 15 percent. A new bumper for a VW Golf costs around 600 to 900 euros painted. For a buyer who has it repaired themselves, no big deal. With these damages, we don't really talk about an "accident vehicle" in the classic sense.

Structural damage

This is the category where it gets serious. Frame deformation, shifted axles, crushed pillars. We're talking repair costs of 5,000 to 15,000 euros and more. The loss in value is 20 to 40 percent, even after a professional repair. Why? Because every buyer gets sceptical about a repaired structural damage. And rightly so. But that doesn't mean the car is worthless. For a 2020 Audi Q5 with a current value of 35,000 euros and a repaired front damage, we're still looking at a purchase value of 20,000 to 25,000 euros. That is not nothing.

Economic total loss

The insurance concludes: the repair costs more than the car is worth. For the insurance, the matter is settled. Not for us. A total loss on a newer vehicle often means that individual parts (engine, gearbox, interior, electronics) are still fully functional and valuable. A 2021 Mercedes GLC with rear damage can still fetch 8,000 to 12,000 euros, even though the repair would cost 18,000 euros. The parts have a market.

Why selling an accident vehicle privately is difficult

I'll be honest with you. Selling an accident vehicle privately is a hassle. Most private buyers are looking for a car without problems. When the listing says "accident damage", 90 percent scroll past immediately. The remaining 10 percent want a bargain price and negotiate aggressively. Then there's the legal risk: as a private seller, you must disclose all known defects. If the buyer later claims you didn't correctly describe the damage, it can get expensive.

On top of that, there's the technical inspection. For a private sale in Luxembourg, the Contrôle Technique from the SNCT must be valid. In Germany, a passed HU (the "TÜV") is expected. In France, the Contrôle Technique must even be less than 6 months old for a private sale. Selling an accident vehicle with an expired technical inspection privately is practically impossible, regardless of the country. And the car might not pass a new inspection. When selling to a professional buyer like mirkaafenaerenauto.lu, none of that applies. We buy accident vehicles even without a valid technical inspection.

The advantage of a professional buyer

As a professional buyer, we assess accident vehicles differently than a private person. We know the repair costs, we have access to cheaper parts, we know which vehicles still have a good market despite the damage. At mirkaafenaerenauto.lu, we buy vehicles in any condition. Accident-free, with body damage, with engine damage, total loss. Every car has a value, and we make you a fair offer.

Another advantage: you don't need a valid technical inspection. Whether in Luxembourg, Germany or France. And the deregistration at the SNCA, the German registration office or via ANTS in France? We handle that too. You bring the car, the registration certificate and your ID. We do the rest.

What affects the value of an accident vehicle?

The same five factors as with any other car, plus the damage itself. Age and brand play a big role. A 2-year-old premium SUV with body damage brings significantly more than a 10-year-old small car with the same problem. The type and extent of the damage determine the deduction. And whether the car has already been repaired or not also makes a difference. A professional repair with documentation is better than a backyard job, and a backyard job is better than no repair at all, because the car is at least driveable.

Expert tip

If you've had an accident, document the damage well. Photos from different angles, the insurance assessment report, repair invoices if available. In Germany, the accident report is particularly important, in France the Constat amiable. The more documents you bring, the more transparent the valuation and the fairer the offer. Hiding things is pointless, we see it anyway.

The insurance and your accident vehicle

When the insurance classifies your accident vehicle as a total loss, you receive the replacement value minus residual value. But the vehicle remains your property. You can keep it and sell it separately. And this is exactly where you shouldn't take the first offer. The residual value exchanges, where insurers determine the residual value, often give low figures. A specialised buyer like mirkaafenaerenauto.lu usually pays more, because we can better assess what the vehicle is still worth.

Accident processing works a bit differently in every country. In Luxembourg, you handle it through your insurance and the Commissariat. In Germany through the insurance and the police report, and in France through the Constat amiable and the Assurance. But regardless of where the accident happened: check with your insurance whether you can keep the vehicle. In most cases that's no problem, but check beforehand.

My advice

If your car has been in an accident, whether a parking bump or a serious crash, don't panic. The car still has value. Don't let towing companies or insurers pressure you with quick, low offers. Get a second opinion. Come to us, bring the car (or we'll pick it up if it's no longer driveable), and get an offer. Costs nothing, commits to nothing.

Accident vehicle? We'll make you an offer.

No matter what damage, no matter what condition. Free valuation, fair prices, immediate payment.
